Hurricane Ida devastated thousands of homes and businesses across NJ, showing again that while no one is safe from the climate crisis, some are more at risk than others. Frontline communities, communities of color and working families that face the worst of climate change have an unfortunate wealth of knowledge about coping with weather-related disasters. This fund builds on that knowledge, moving resources to frontline community organizations to drive equitable Ida relief while preparing to meet the next crisis. Led by Ironbound Community Corporation, Make the Road New Jersey, and the New Jersey Organizing Project, the NJ Ida Just Recovery Fund will dedicate approximately 70% of funds received to meet the immediate relief needs of communities struggling to recover from Ida and 30% of funds raised to building long-term organizing capacity in impacted communities. Recovering from disaster has multiple layers and takes years - frontline organizations will be key to ensure that there is a full, fair, Ida recovery here in New Jersey.
